Hairdresser in Shepperton
Since i am a hairdresser from Shepperton, Middlesex based in the south of England, and have grown up and lived in Shepperton all my life, i thought i’d share with you some interesting facts about my hometown!
“Shepperton attacked by Martians”, Yes it happened but thankfully in an enduring work of fiction called The War of the Worlds by H G Wells, published worldwide which meant an untold number of people have heard of Shepperton, but may not know too much about its whereabouts. So allow me to give you an insight to the area.
Being an urban village within the borough of Spelthorne, Surrey, the town of Shepperton is mentioned in the Doomsday book in the Year of 1086 AD. It lies on the northern bank of the river Thames equidistant between Sunbury and Chertsey. On the southern banks lie the towns of Walton on Thames which is reached by crossing one of the newest road bridges across the river. Opened in 2013 at a cost of £32.4 million it replaced many ancient crossings on of which is depicted in a painting by JMW Turner in the year 1806, and an even earlier painting of a wooden structure painted by Canaletto in 1754. Canaletto was more famous for his paintings of Venice so his respect for this Shepperton / Walton crossing is something to be proud of.
By crossing the same bridge the town of Weybridge may be reached which claims one of the most expensive areas in the UK to live, known as St. George’s Hill, some 900 acres including exclusive golf and tennis clubs. Some of its residents have included, John Lennon, Tom Jones, Elton John, Cliff Richard, Ringo Starr, Jenson Button and Eric Sykes to name but a few.
Shepperton is well served for the traveller, being just 8 miles from London’s Heathrow Airport, about 10 minute drive to the M3 motorway and the same distance to the notorious M25 ring road. Shepperton has its own end of line railway station adjacent to the High Street, with frequent services to London’s Waterloo station, just over 18 miles away.
The train station was opened in 1864, however it was reported that this bought with it an influx of travellers from London to witness and gamble on bare knuckle boxing matches in the Village Square. Thankfully that same area is now a haven for pub and restaurant goers.
For many years Shepperton has been the home of Shepperton Studios, over the years hundreds of films have been made for the big screen and TV, some of the more notable productions being Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Star Wars (1977), Blade Runner (1982) and Iron Man (2010). The studios at present is undergoing a massive redevelopment as Netflix is more than doubling its size and capabilities. Hollywood watch out!
I hope you enjoyed this, and please contact me for all your hairdressing needs in Shepperton and beyond.
